Alex Askew – Partner
Background
Alex trained and qualified at Jackson Parton and in September 2016 became a partner at the firm.
Area of practice
Alex specialises in all forms of dispute resolution with a sector focus on shipping, commodities and international trade. He acts for a broad range of international clients, including shipowners, charterers, P&I Clubs, insurers, freight forwarders, commodity traders and foreign law firms, in litigation and arbitration (including LMAA, LCIA, GAFTA, FOSFA, RSA and SA).
His recent work spans both wet and dry shipping and trade disputes, including unsafe port and berth claims, unseaworthiness allegations, off-hire and performance disputes, demurrage and detention, cargo claims, bill of lading issues, and disputes arising in contractual chains under sale of goods and commodity contracts. Acting for parties on both the owner and chartering sides, as well as on the underlying commodity transactions, he brings a strong commercial understanding of carriage of goods by sea and the wider trade chain, enabling him to advise with the bigger picture firmly in view. Alongside his contentious practice, he regularly assists clients with contract drafting, including charterparties and commodity contracts, as well as house bills of lading and warehouse agreement terms. He also has experience in marine insurance and superyachts.
Alex has been recognised by Legal 500 as a “Next Generation Partner” and a “Leading Partner”.
